Unforgettable experiences
Spending a night on a deserted island in the Maldives
I spent one night on Gaathafushi, the private uninhabited island next to W Maldives. It is a very unusual way to experience the Maldives, but it is important to understand what the night really includes before adding it to a trip.

Why stay overnight
The main reason is simple: there are no other guests
Before this trip, I had already stayed at Maldives resorts with beautiful and almost empty beaches. They still had villas, restaurants and other guests a few minutes away. Gaathafushi felt different because the whole island was reserved for one booking.
It is not a random island where you arrive with camping gear. Gaathafushi belongs to W Maldives, which is based on neighbouring Fesdu Island in North Ari Atoll. The resort arranges the boat, the place to sleep, dinner and breakfast.
This gives you the privacy of an uninhabited island without the practical problems of independent camping. The bed, meals, water and bathroom are already organised.

Arriving on Gaathafushi
The boat left from W Maldives
The transfer started at W Maldives on Fesdu Island. Gaathafushi is close to the resort, so this was a short local boat transfer rather than another long journey across the atoll.
I took one small bag because everything needed for the night was already on the island. The sleeping area had been prepared beneath the thatched shelter, with a proper bed inside the luxury tent and a private bathroom with a shower.
There was enough time to change, walk around the island and swim before dinner. Gaathafushi is small, so the first walk quickly shows you the entire place: the beach, the shelter and the water around it.

The overnight setup
What was ready on the island
01
Private use of Gaathafushi
The whole island is reserved for one booking. There are no other hotel guests staying beside you.
02
A prepared place to sleep
The overnight setup uses a luxury tent and the W Bed beneath the island’s thatched shelter. A private bathroom and shower are included.
03
Dinner
A private chef prepares a candlelit BBQ on the island. It is served as the evening meal during the overnight experience.
04
Breakfast
Breakfast is served after sunrise. The resort describes it as a champagne breakfast.
Dinner and the night
Dinner on the beach, then a quiet night on the island
Dinner was a private BBQ prepared on the island and served at a table on the beach. There were no other guests and no reason to return to the resort restaurant during the evening.
After dinner, I used the shower, changed and stayed around the beach and sleeping area. This was the point when the difference from a resort villa became most noticeable: no people walking past, no music from a bar and no neighbouring rooms.
Swimming and snorkelling are better kept to daylight. The evening itself is about having dinner, sitting outside and enjoying the privacy rather than trying to fill the time with activities.
The proper bed and private bathroom make the stay much more comfortable than normal camping. Insect repellent is still worth carrying, and clothes are easiest to keep inside the bag until they are needed.
The next morning
Sunrise, one more swim and breakfast
I got up before breakfast, walked around the island and went for one more swim. This was the best time to use the beach because the sand was cool and breakfast had not arrived yet.
W Maldives includes breakfast in the overnight and describes it as a champagne breakfast. After eating, there is very little to pack before the boat trip back to Fesdu.
One night was enough. The island is small and there are no additional places to visit once you are there. The point is to have it privately for an evening and a morning, then continue the rest of the Maldives trip from the resort.
Getting there
Velana Airport, Fesdu Island, then Gaathafushi
W Maldives is 57 kilometres from Velana International Airport. The resort uses a mandatory return seaplane transfer. At Velana, the W Maldives airport team handles the seaplane check-in and the transfer to the seaplane terminal.
The published return fare is US$730 net per adult and US$365 net per child aged 2–11. This is separate from the W Maldives room and the Gaathafushi overnight.
After arriving at W Maldives on Fesdu Island, the final part is a resort boat to Gaathafushi. Independent boats are not used for this stay.
Cost
There are three separate costs
1. Resort stay
At least one night at W Maldives on Fesdu Island
2. Seaplane
US$730 adult return; US$365 child return
3. Island overnight
A date-priced addition with no fixed public online rate
W Maldives does not publish one fixed Gaathafushi overnight price. The Maldives Tourism Goods and Services Tax is 17%, and the Green Tax is US$12 per person per night. The published seaplane fares above are listed by the resort as net prices.
What to take
Everything fitted in one small bag
Swimwear
One dry outfit for dinner and the morning
Reef-safe sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat
Reef shoes
Insect repellent
Personal medication
A power bank
A small soft bag instead of a suitcase
Would I do it again?
Yes, for one night during a longer Maldives stay
I would not choose Gaathafushi instead of a full resort stay. I would add it to one. The island has one main experience: spending the evening and morning privately with the sleeping setup and meals already arranged.
It worked for me because I wanted privacy and did not expect a list of activities. If that is what you want as well, one night is the right amount of time.
