Seasonal trips
Cycling through the tulip fields around Lisse
I had seen the tulips inside Keukenhof before, but cycling outside the park was a completely different day. The fields were working farms, the route went through ordinary Dutch roads and I could stop whenever the flowers changed colour.
Why I chose a bike
The fields are outside the park and spread around Lisse
Keukenhof is a designed garden. The tulips are planted in beds, every path is planned and the flowers stay inside the park. The production fields outside Lisse are different: long rows grown by bulb farmers beside roads, houses and drainage canals.
Driving past them would have been too quick, and walking would have limited the distance. A bicycle was the useful middle option. I could cover the main 15-kilometre loop and still stop for photographs without blocking a narrow road.
The route combines the blue and purple Keukenhof cycle routes. Coloured signs mark the loop during the spring season, and the ride itself is free.

15 km blue and purple cycle loop

Starting the ride
I collected the bike beside Keukenhof
The starting address was Stationsweg 166A in Lisse, beside the main Keukenhof entrance. The rental point is outside the park because bicycles are not used inside Keukenhof itself.
I started with the blue route and continued onto the purple route to make the full 15-kilometre loop. Without stopping, the distance takes around an hour. With photographs, a farm visit and lunch in Lisse, it easily becomes half a day.
Starting early helped. The paths were quieter, rental bikes were still available and it was easier to stop at the side of the road without joining a group of other cyclists.
The main parts of the loop
What I passed during the ride
01
Keukenhof
The cycle route starts beside the park at Stationsweg 166A. Bikes stay outside Keukenhof, so the park visit and the ride are two separate parts of the day.
02
Loosterweg Noord
This is where the route begins to feel rural. The roads are narrow, the cycle paths are clear and the production fields appear on both sides.
03
3e Loosterweg
The road passes more bulb fields and several visitor attractions where photographs inside a planted display are allowed with an admission ticket.
04
Lisse centre
The final part returns through Lisse, where cafés around Heereweg make an easy stop before finishing the loop.
What the fields look like
The colour changes from one farm to the next
The first field I passed was mostly one colour. A few minutes later there were several rows of red, yellow and pink. That kept happening throughout the ride because each grower plants different varieties and uses a different schedule.
Not every field was full of tulips. Some had daffodils or hyacinths, some were still green and others had already been cut. These are working farms growing bulbs, so the flowers are removed when the crop needs it rather than kept for visitors.
That is also why one old route photograph cannot show exactly what will be blooming on a particular day. The current Bollenstreek flower map is the useful check before leaving.
The 2027 season
Keukenhof opens from 18 March to 9 May 2027
Those official dates cover the full spring flower season, not only the peak tulip weeks. Daffodils normally appear first, followed by hyacinths and then tulips.
For a ride focused on outdoor tulip fields, the middle part of April is usually the strongest target. Weather still controls the exact flowering period, so the live flower map matters more than choosing the same calendar date every year.
Keukenhof tickets for 2027 go on sale in mid-October 2026. A park ticket is separate from the free cycling route outside the gates.
One rule that matters
Stay on the road beside production fields
The large fields beside the route are private farms. I stopped at the edge of the public road and took photographs from there. No fence does not mean that visitors can walk between the rows.
Stepping into a field can damage flowers, bulbs and the soil used by the grower. Flowers should never be picked. This rule applies to the production fields even when other people are already standing inside them.
For a photograph inside the flowers, the correct option is a visitor attraction or show garden such as Tulip Experience Amsterdam, The Tulip Barn or De Tulperij. These places have areas planted for visitors and photographers.
What to take
Pack for Dutch spring weather
A light waterproof jacket
A phone holder or printed route map
Water and a small snack
Sunglasses and sunscreen
A power bank
Comfortable shoes for cycling and walking
A small bag that stays secure on the bike
Route
15 kilometres and free to cycle
Useful timing
Start early and use the current flower map
Field rule
Photograph production fields from the road
Would I do it again?
Yes, and I would keep the same simple route
The 15-kilometre loop was long enough to see many different fields without turning the day into a sports ride. It also left enough time for Keukenhof or a tulip farm afterwards.
The best part was not one specific field. It was being able to stop, continue for ten minutes and find a completely different set of colours on the next road.
